Answers To Popular Car Insurance Queries
Question
Would I get a market value or book value of my car in case of an accident?
Answer
Getting the market value is usually better than book value of the car, especially because sometimes it takes into account the actual mileage, colour and condition of the car.
Question
Would I get special discounts due to advanced driving tests (such as PassPlus etc?)
Answer
Only some insurance companies give discounts for these advanced qualifications.
Question
How much is your stereo cover?
Answer
Companies have different cover ranges for stereos. This can be fully comprehensive, TPFT and TP only, and no excess is payable with most companies (i.e. your stereo is usually freely covered).
Question
Would I get windscreen cover for TPFT or Third Party Only?
Answer
There is no cover for windscreen damage on Third Party Fire and Theft and Third Party Only policies. On comprehensive policies, some companies do not cover damage to windscreens other than the front windscreen. You should always establish exactly the nature of the windscreen cover being offered when you request a quotation.
Question
What is the maximum No Claims Discount that an insurance company will give?
Answer
Most companies only give a maximum of five years or 65% NCO. However, there are companies that give up to nine years and 75% No Claim Discounts.
Question
Am I covered to drive other cars?
Answer
Usually, with comprehensive cover, you are covered to drive other cars when needed under third party only regulations (which means ifyou unfortunately have an accident while driving your friend's car, the insurers will only payout to compensate for damages to the other party: your friend's car will not be covered). Again, you should check with the insurance company.
Some companies may not give you automatic third party cover for driving other cars (sometimes your profession can have an impact on this decision also, e.g. some companies are known to not cover students for driving other cars).
